Pandora's Box

In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first human woman created by Hephaestus on the instructions of Zeus. According to Hesiod, when Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus, the king of the gods, took vengeance by presenting Pandora to Prometheus' brother Epimetheus. Pandora opened a jar left in her care containing sickness, death and many other unspecified evils which were then released into the world. Though she hastened to close the container, only one thing was left behind – usually translated as Hope. The container mentioned in the original account was actually a large storage jar, but the word was later mistranslated as a box, hence the term "Pandora's Box," which has become so ubiquitous that I've kept that as the title for this piece.

It once ranged throughout the Korean Peninsula, northern China and eastern Mongolia. This is my fifth tiger, and fourth Siberian, made to commemorate 2022, the Year of the Water Tiger. Zantedeschia is a genus of eight species of herbaceous, perennial, flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to southern Africa from South Africa north to Malawi. Common names include arum lily for Z. aethiopica and calla and calla lily for Z. elliottiana and Z. rehmannii, although members of the genus are neither true lilies of Liliaceae, true Arums, nor true Callas (related genera in Araceae). The colourful flowers and leaves of both species and cultivars are greatly valued and commonly grown as ornamental plants.
