Sherlock Holmes

"To a great mind, nothing is little."
One of my favorite literary characters of all time, Sherlock Holmes was the creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and first appeared in 1887's A Study in Scarlet. Conan Doyle claimed he based Holmes on Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, whom he met in 1877 and had worked for as a clerk. However, the greatest influence on the popular image of Holmes was perhaps Sidney Paget, the artist who illustrated Holmes and Watson for the Strand Magazine. Paget based Holmes' likeness on his older brother Walter, also an artist and whom was actually the intended illustrator the Strand meant to hire for the Conan Doyle's short stories. My sculpture is a tribute to Paget's work and a composite of a few actors that portrayed the iconic detective: Basil Rathbone, Peter Cushing, and my personal favorite Jeremy Brett. Camellias are a genus of flowering plants in the family Theaceae. They are found in eastern and southern Asia, from the Himalayas east to Japan and Indonesia. There are 100–300 described species, with some controversy over the exact number. There are also around 3,000 hybrids. Camellias are famous throughout East Asia; they are known as cháhuā (茶花, 'tea flower') in Chinese, tsubaki (椿) in Japanese, dongbaek-kkot (동백꽃) in Korean, and as hoa trà or hoa chè in Vietnamese. This one was a commission to be given as a wedding gift. My thanks again to the Ceramic Art Studio and Shop.
