King Kong

The sculpting of Ann Darrow took about as long as Kong. She is just over 2 inches tall from head to toe, and the granuality of the clay particles prevented adding much further detail. Like Peter Jackson in his 2005 remake, I based Kong on a western lowland silverback but with his face modeled after Shabani, the world's most photogenic ape. The overall composition is based on the 2005 film poster. The key difference between Kong and a western lowland silverback gorilla is more humanized facial features, especially the eyes, and most notably the absence of a "silver" back. My thanks again to the Ceramic Art Studio and Shop.

Perun

In Slavic mythology, Perun is the highest god of the pantheon and the god of sky, thunder, lightning, storms, rain, law, war, fertility and oak trees. He is traditionally equated with Thor, the Norse god of thunder. In iconology, Perun is often with an axe and hexagonal thunder symbols. My thanks again to the Ceramic Art Studio and Shop.

Dolphin Jewelry Dish

I believe this is my sixth dolphin sculpture in one form or another. They are evidently very popular and are requested often. My thanks again to the Ceramic Art Studio and Shop.

Vasilisa the beautiful

Vasilisa the Beautiful is a Russian/Slavic fairy tale collected and published by Alexander Afanasyev between 1855 and 1863. For those not familiar with it, it is a cross between Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel, and is as much about the legendary Baba Yaga as it is about Vasilisa. (YouTube has several tellings of this, but the Russian film "Vasilisa the Beautiful" is actually not based on this fairy tale of the same name.) This piece is my take on the iconic scene of Vasilisa carrying the magical skull-lantern through the forest which has been captured by many artists. My thanks again to the Ceramic Art Studio and Shop.
